We seem to be running low on supplies in the classroom. Please be sure you have scissors, notebook paper, pencils and spiral notebooks for all classes.
In addition, you should have a library book at school at all times for silent reading in the classroom.
There is no homework for the weekend, but students should use this time to work on their Black History Month Research Project (4th and 5th), Northeast States Project (4th) and Explorers Project (5th).
Reading: Book report is due on February 8 -- Black History Research Project. For tomorrow, your Loser scrapbook should be completed and turned in.
Writing: Letter to Jerry Spinelli (author of Loser). Should be at least three paragraphs. Can ask questions, tell what you thought of Loser, talk about other books you have read, tell whether you liked Loser or not, suggestions for future books.
Science: If not completed in class, complete study guides.
Math:
4th: no homework. We introduced changing units of time. Still needs to be worked on before homework is assigned. Any in-class worksheets not completed should be turned in tomorrow.
5th: Finish problems 8-17 on page 154. Always write out the problem, show work and show answer.
I will be keeping this website up-to-date on a weekly basis with homework assignments, topics of study, projects and in-class assignments. In general, the things that remain the same are as follows:
Each morning the students come in and find a Daily Oral Language exercise on their desks as well as a journal entry as their morning work. The DOL's cover grammar lessons we are currently working on as well as ones we've covered in the past but want to keep reinforcing. For the journal entry, it is expected that each student writes a minimum of 2 paragraphs with each paragraph having 3 sentences or more. On Fridays, I do collect these and provide a grade for each day (20 points per day possible). Please be sure you are keeping up with the journals. In addition, DOL tests are given each Tuesday for the previous week's work. Again, these are all done together at the board and should be used to study from on Monday nights.
Spelling:
Monday: Pretest
Thursday: In-class review
Friday: Test
Math (4th grade): We are currently covering time, elapsed time, elapsed time on a calendar, and temperature.
Math (5th grade): We just completed comparing decimals and are moving into adding, subtracting and multiplying decimals.
As recognition and celebration of Black History Month in February, each student chose from a list of African Americans who have made great contributions in history. This is just a reminder to continue your research and gathering of information.
Welcome back everyone and wishing you all a happy and healthy 2009!
I am going to be using this webpage as a means for parents and students to access information about our classroom, homework, long-term assignments, what we are studying in each subject area and as a means for communicating with me.
